This course focuses on the fundamental principles that inform research-based literacy and reading
instruction. Learners will analyze best practices for phonemic awareness, phonics, and word recognition to develop the skills required for students to expand vocabulary, improve comprehension and fluency, and gain independence. Learners will also explore the literacy needs of English language learners (ELL),

South Carolina Read to Succeed (R2S) Foundations in Reading Credit Approval:
Approved by the South Carolina Department of Education on 8/16/16, this course is one of four required to earn the R2S Literacy Teacher Endorsement which all SC educators certified in Early Childhood, Elementary, Special Education, Montessori (through Elem II), and ESOL (if primary area of certification) must earn within two certificate renewal cycles.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction re-affirmed the literacy credit acceptance of this course on 8/17/16.
